Background

Keirnan Park Recreation and Sporting Precinct is a 63-hectare site located on the corner of Keirnan Street and South Western Highway, Mundijong.

In recognition of the significant population growth in the Shire, an assessment of community infrastructure and public open space needs identified the need for a district sporting space that can also perform a regional function for identified key sporting codes.

Keirnan Park was identified as the most appropriate location for this sport space and this was supported by a decision by the State Government in August 2020 to provide $20 million for a first stage development. The precinct's Masterplan was endorsed by Council on 15 March 2021.

  • Share Hi All, I've perused the Final Masterplan and it appears there is limited space accounted for refreshments/eating spaces. There is a kiosk/kitchen, but this would only provide basic, and most likely snack/unhealthy options. Will there be opportunity for a cafe (reasonably priced, not upper market) to cater for healthy meals for those finishing physical activities. There are limited food options in the Whitby/Mundijong area, and Byford contains minimal eateries, mostly junk food. I believe it is important to include a healthy eating base and cafe at the Recreation Centre, with a range of beverages. on Facebook Share Hi All, I've perused the Final Masterplan and it appears there is limited space accounted for refreshments/eating spaces. The AFL Pavilion design has allowed for an average size kitchen and kiosk, however, the main purpose of these are to service clubs and community functions, not as Café on day to day operation. Your comments on a café at the Recreation Centre are noted, however this has not been designed yet. This opportunity can be explored when the Rec Centre planning phase begins, which is anticipated to be approximately 15 years away.

The Keirnan Park Masterplan has identified and recommended that grass and synthetic athletics facility be built. This will be delivered as part of a future stage of the project - at this point there is no specific timeline for planning or delivery of athletic facilities.

Netball is identified and included in the Keirnan Park Masterplan and has been identified for delivery as part of Stage 1C.

15 courts are included to be built but are currently unfunded. The Shire is advocating for external funding to assist with the planning, design and construction of Stage 1C.

Kiernan Park...? Who was it named after?

Geoff Kiernan asked over 2 years ago

Thanks for your question. From a local history book, we have been able to find the following information about the name Keirnan:

“In 1895, Mrs Mary Ann Keirnan became the first postmistress at Mundijong. Mrs Keirnan planted the now huge pine trees on the strip of land between Paterson Street and the railway line.”

We will see if there is any other information we can find out about the history of “Keirnan” in Serpentine Jarrahdale. As for the precinct being named Keirnan Park, as the location is located on Keirnan Street, this is the reason for this name.

    Kind regards, SJ Communications Team.
