About the project:

The SJ Community Recreation Centre is the community hub for Byford, and the home for indoor community sport and recreation.

Basketball is extremely popular with young people in the Shire and is one of the fastest growing sports with more than 500 young people playing year-round.

But the existing indoor courts at the centre are usually fully booked, cannot cater for current and future demand and are not compliant for local teams to host competition matches.

There is currently no room in SJ for basketball to grow and hundreds of families have to travel out of the Shire to play.

The redevelopment of the SJ Community Recreation Centre will:

• Deliver four indoor basketball courts and the ability to develop competition level basketball.

• Provide additional space for other court sports such as netball and futsal.

• Provide contemporary change facilities for all genders.

• Provide larger gymnasium and fitness rooms to cater for demand.

• Deliver enhanced out-of-school-care facilities.

We’re advocating to state and federal government for $43.77 million to help realise our community’s vision for a modern, contemporary recreation centre, which will provide a regional service for now and the future.

What’s Happening Now?

Two expansion options for the SJ Community Recreation Centre were presented to Council in September 2024.

Concept 2 was endorsed by Council as the preferred option.
