The Shire has received a development application for a proposed Battery Energy Storage System at the site shown following:

The development application seeks approval for the installation of a 125MW/500MWh Battery Energy Storage System used to import and export energy to the South West. The facility would not generate electricity, but rather be focused on storage and dispatching of energy to match network needs. The facility would comprise of an arrangement of batteries, inverters and control systems which would be connected to the Western Power transmission network via overhead transmission lines. Location is driven by the need to have land which sits beneath such transmission lines, hence the selection of this property. Supporting infrastructure including an operations and maintenance facility, drainage infrastructure and site office are also proposed.

Access to the site is proposed via the existing crossovers on Karnup Road and O’Neil Road. Once operational, the site would operate with minimal on-site requirements, utilising remote monitoring, with a maximum of two staff on site at any one time.

Submissions on the proposed development may be lodged by one of the following ways:

  • Email your feedback to info@sjshire.wa.gov.au stating the following reference number: PA25/104
  • A written submission, submitted by mail or in person to 6 Paterson Street, Mundijong, including the reference number: PA25/104
  • Completing an online form below.

Submissions close 5:00pm, Thursday, 2 October 2025.
