Why is the updated Dog Local Law needed?

    The proposed Local Law will clarify certain aspects of the Dog Act/Regulations and assist in maintaining the community expectations for dog owners to control and contain their dogs.

    Will I have extra responsibilities as a dog owner?

    Yes, only that dog owners are responsible for disposing of their dog’s excrement when deposited on public land. Other aspects of the updated Local Law are already in place or clarify the provisions Dog Act/Regulations

    Will owners be required to have suitable fences and close their gates?

    Owners are currently required to have their dog held on a lead while in public and not allow the dog to trespass on private property. The Proposed updated Local Law will specify that dogs are to be adequately confined by fence, gate, enclosure or other confinement measures.

    Will the updated Local Law affect the “Stop Puppy Farming Bill”

    No, the proposed changes to the Dog Act/Regulations in relation to “Puppy Farming” will not be affected by the proposed Local Law

    Do other councils have Dog Local Laws?

    Yes, most Local Governments have implemented a Dog Local Law.

    My neighbours dog barks and is a nuisance, will this proposed law help?

    The Dog Act 1976 already has provisions for nuisance dogs. Further information is available on the Shire’s website.
