Carer Gateway Emergency Respite

Carer Gateway Emergency Respite is designed to offer support to carers, on a case-by-case basis. It is specifically for those who are experiencing an urgent, unplanned, and imminent event that threatens the health and safety of the carer or care recipient. In these circumstances the carer’s ability to continue caring are restricted and no other services are available.

Eligible circumstances may include:
• Natural disasters requiring evacuation
• Immediate harm to the carer (eg. suicide, family/domestic violence, carer requiring immediate hospitalisation due to accident or illness).
• Mental health conditions necessitating immediate intervention from police or hospital/ mental health facility.
• Homelessness (eg. immediate displacement or eviction).
• Impending legal action of carer (eg. arrest, S.A.T).
• Carer and/or care recipient entering palliative care (outside of government funded palliative care).

Emergency respite is implemented within 3 business days of request, for eligible circumstances only.
