What is “Separable Portion 4” in regards to the Abernethy Road upgrade project?

The Abernethy Road Upgrade Project was divided into four separate portions.

Separable Portion 4 is the works within the Rail Boundary of Abernethy Road and is the final portion of the road upgrade project to be completed.

What does the work consist of?

The remaining works to be carried out as part of Separable Portion 4 includes:

    • road widening
    • rail replacement
    • installation of pedestrian crossing mazes
    • new boom gates
    • commissioning of the rail crossing

When will the works be carried out?

To facilitate the works, there will be a full rail crossing shutdown from 7pm, Thursday, 8 April 2021 – Sunday, 25 April 2021.

What impact will this have for road and rail users?

    No trains will be operating from 7pm, Thursday, 8 April 2021 – 7am Monday, 12 April 2021.

Vehicles will not be able to cross Abernethy Road at the rail crossing heading west from South Western Highway or heading east from the shopping centres.

There will be traffic management and detours in place to ensure works are completed safely. Delays to traffic are expected, however, will be kept to a minimum.

Please allow extra time and care when using Abernethy Road during the works.

Can pedestrians still use the Abernethy Road level crossing?

The pedestrian crossing will be closed from 7pm, Thursday, 8 April 2021 – 7am, Monday 12 April 2021. We recognise this will cause disruption for pedestrians.

Pedestrians can use the southern pedestrian maze at Abernethy Road from 7am, Monday 12 April.

    Will there be night works?

Yes. Night works will be carried out from 7pm, Thursday, 8 April 2021 – 7am, Monday, 12 April 2021.

Are businesses still open during this time?

Yes, businesses will still be open during this time. We encourage you to continue to support local businesses while the works are being undertaken.

Why was this date chosen for the works to be carried out?

The dates were agreed to by the Shire, PTA and the contractor. The dates for the works also coincide with the Denny Avenue/Kelmscott rail crossing works to minimise disruption to rail services.

Where can I view a detour map?

A detour map is available under the document section of this webpage.

Why are road works being done on Soldiers Road when this is part of the detour?

Soldiers Road rehabilitation works were scheduled and due to the timing of the Abernethy Road rail crossing works, this was unavoidable.

We recognise that this may cause some delays and we encourage road users to allow extra time for their travel.

How will the Shire update the community during the works?

Communication and updates to the community will be provided regularly on this webpage and our social media channels. Alternatively you can contact us on 9526 1111 or email info@sjshire.wa.gov.au

    Will public transport be affected?

Yes. Please visit the Transperth website for further information and route changes.
